Continuing in our neo absurdist critique of contemporary culture and in our re-appropriation of corporate aesthetics we created a flat pack phone booth, a faux promotional video loop of a smiling man prompting the audience to dial the hotline number, and through collaboration with a programmer an automated skype phone server. The server delivered a performance writing script that offered menus for the audience to select from using the touch pad phones as they were funnelled deeper and deeper into an increasingly self referential disorienting lexicon.

Groupless has been considering Batailles’ ‘formless’ working as the disruption of the form it occurs within, and how we have performed something else within and through that disruption.

For me this disruption was temporal, my piece entitled ‘Here And Now And Then And There’ bridges two sites and a time span of fifty years. Time is understood in my work through spatial interactions, and through an individuals internal world of memory. The totality of an understandng of time and place is a fusion of these modes of interaction.

Event: 'Newlyn Live Art Platform' Day of live, installation & video art
Venue: Newlyn Orion Gallery, Newlyn, Cornwall

Artists: (ArtDept...) Rebecca Weeks & Ian Whitford, Irene Crouch (see link below for other artists)

This was the first work that Artdept made, through it we identified our thematic of usurping and parodying the apparatus of power of redirecting systems and structures and of questioning the validity of anonymous unaccountable Arts organisations. Our approach fused a kind of neo absurdist critique of contemporary culture and the use of an apparently benign corporate aesthetic. The work involved Live Art, video, installation, and performance writing.

Some men in Artdept overalls appeared set up a table, chairs, projector and screen pressed play and then went outside to smoke, they knew nothing about the work. Three mouths spoke to the audience from the screen about Artdepts aims for the Arts, accompanied by pie charts and logos the voices continued their sales pitch until the absurdity of the language consumed all sense. The video ended and the workmen removed the flat pack office, video projector, screen and all trace of Artdept.
