In this essay I discuss Georges Batailles
concept of “l’informe” and
my understanding of Jean Baudrillards model
of femininity and its subtle operation of
seduction as a possible example of “l’informe”
or the formless in action

I had been researching Chinese contemporary
art in relation to the negotiation processes
of curating a show. I conducted my research
through the Internet and through correspondence
with artist Ma Yongfeng. I focussed on finding
out why specific works, artists and curators
are selected whilst others are neglected,
or censored by the government. My aim was
to achieve a greater understanding of the
possibilities of making and showing works
in China and how the selection process influences
our knowledge of ‘The Other’,
in this case Chinese art.
Ma Yongfeng (b. 1971) is a Chinese video artist
and photographer, currently doing a residency
in ArtSway.

Things of apparently little consequence, the
humble things that are over looked, these
are the entry points into the formless. The
apparently useless and ineffectual things
that society discards, things not of man,
these are touchstones for the formless. This
text discusses my work for the 'Something
Like Spit' show in relation to Batailles'
writing on the formless and Heidegger's 'Dasein'
or becoming.

In my presentation I discussed the demand
made by Walter Benjamin to make work that
not only questions but alters the dynamic
of the false divide between artist and audience,
culture and politics a divide which conveniently
obscures and masks a lack of attention to
the ways that capitalist markets produce inequalities
in terms of access and outcomes within culture.

I discussed Bachelard’s ‘dialectics
of Outside and Inside’ and alienation
in relation to Michel de Certeau’s discussion
of ‘Spatial Stories’ and delinquencies.
Both of these texts address being, generally
and specifically and its relation to space.
I also discuss space itself and what I understand
that to mean. |

I wrote this article to record the Tate Debate
as I was shocked to find when I phoned up
and spoke to the press officer at the Tate
that no one would be writing it up, that there
would be no record of the discussion. As a
local artist and curator I was disheartened
by this apparent lack of organisation or interest
in the outcome of this debate, which I hope
will be a catalyst for positive change in
Penwith. I have not written a transcript of
the debate but I have tried to select the
factors that seemed most significant to me
in writing about the debate. I have posted
this article on the Art Cornwall site and
Curatorial Network.

In this essay I discuss ‘being’
and how it is defined through the elements
of space and time within the equation of ‘being’.
I will also discuss journeying in my exploration
of ‘being’ from the theoretical
into the experiential. I describe the theoretical
ground from which this enquiry was launched
and the experiences I had which relate to
these ideas, and which have offered me new
approaches to and insights into ‘being’.
